BASIS Japan Day 2024 Highlights Bangladesh-Japan Digital Collaboration
To strengthen trade, business expansion, and showcase Bangladesh's technological capabilities, the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) hosted ‘BASIS Japan Day 2024’ at the Renaissance Dhaka Gulshan Hotel.
Marking the occasion, a seminar titled “Digital Transformation: Opportunities for Japan-Bangladesh Collaboration” was held. The keynote paper was presented by Faiez Ahmed Tayeb, Policy Advisor of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division.
During the event, a cooperation agreement was signed between BASIS Japan Desk and Miyazaki IT Plus. On behalf of BASIS, the agreement was signed by AKM Ahmedul Islam Babu, Chairman of BASIS Japan Desk, and Noriaki Wakada, President of Miyazaki IT Plus. Another agreement was finalized with the event's gold sponsor, Kawai and e-Growth.
Miyazaki City’s Vice Mayor, Hidenari Nagayama, praised Bangladesh’s progress in the technology sector, mentioning that he observed significant advancements during his visit after five years. He also highlighted the natural beauty of Miyazaki City, describing its serene grey and green landscapes.
Ichiguchi Tomohide, Chief Representative of JICA Bangladesh, greeted the audience and emphasized the potential of Bangladesh’s ICT sector in addressing youth employment. “The ICT sector in Bangladesh is well-prepared to not only support the nation but also contribute to the global economy,” he stated. He further noted that JICA’s support enabled the ICT Division to implement the ICT Master Plan, including programs like BJD and BMED. Additionally, 241 Bangladeshi engineers trained at Miyazaki University have secured jobs in Japan.
Mayomi Murayama, Executive Vice President of IDE under JETRO’s research wing, expressed JETRO’s commitment to promoting foreign investments in Bangladesh's industrial sector. He added, “Japanese companies will focus on fintech, logistics, and e-commerce in Bangladesh to boost the country’s economic growth.”
The event’s chief guest, Iwama Kiminori, the Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh, expressed optimism about strengthening ties between the two nations.
Special guests included Shish Haider Chowdhury, Secretary of the ICT Division; Faiez Ahmed Tayeb, Policy Advisor (Coordination and Reform) of the ICT Division; Yasue Yoshinari, Director and Vice President of Miyazaki University, Japan; and Tarek Rafi Bhuiyan (Jun), President of the Japan-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JBCCI).
